![]() New bin device goes on trial
A unique locking device for wheeled bins has been developed and is being tested by Blaby District Council Neighbourhood Services Team.
A resident contacted the council and raised concerns about the increased litter that can result during windy weather on collection days if bins, especially those used to collect paper and card are blown over.
Council refuse staff gave the problem some thought and came up with a simple elastic strap which can be used to clip the lid closed and be easily fitted to standard wheeled bins.
Bins fitted with the new device have been supplied to residents in the Maytree Drive area of Kirby Muxloe and will be monitored over the coming months. The trial is being carried out on both refuse and paper/card bins.
Councillor Guy Jackson, Cabinet Portfolio holder for the Natural and Built Environment said.
We encourage people to recycle paper and card by providing a kerbside collection service and obviously we want to avoid spillages that create litter during periods of bad weather.
We believe this clip is a first and are delighted that we have been able to develop it “in-house”. We are always keen to hear from our residents, and when this problem was pointed out to us we took up the challenge of finding a solution. This should help to keep our streets cleaner as we seek to increase the amount of paper and card which is recycled.
